TANK MAN Tank Man, or the Unknown Rebel, is the nickname of an anonymous man who stood in front of a column of Chinese tanks the morning after the Chinese military forcibly removed protestors from in and around Beijing’s Tiananmen Square on June 5, 1989. Several hundred civilians had been shot dead by the Chinese army during a bloody military operation to crush a democratic protest (most of which were peaceful) in Peking's (Beijing) Tiananmen Square the previous day.

PACIFISM • The belief that war and violence are unjustifiable under any circumstances, and that all disputes should be settled by peaceful means. • The refusal to participate in war or military service because of such a belief.
