One Semester of Ethics Education What have we learned? Vikas Kakkar
Ethics Education • As you might recall, from this Semester, FB has started implementing an ethics education program that integrates five core human values (Integrity, Responsibility, Fairness, Respect and Compassion) into the Year 1 curriculum. • We held a workshop in Dec. 2003 in which representatives from all 6 departments shared examples of how these values could be integrated into the Year 1 curriculum of their particular disciplines.
Ethics Education • These presentations were uploaded on the Year 1 instructors’ website so that they could be used by all instructors. (http://year1.cityu.edu.hk) • We held another Teaching and Learning Forum in January, just before the beginning of the semester, and all the instructors and tutors were briefed about the ethics program.
Ethics Education • What were our collective experiences with this program after one semester? • How successful were we in integrating the 5 core values into the Year 1 curriculum? • What were the difficulties that teachers experienced in implementing the program? • What resources can we provide for sustaining and improving this program?
Ethics Education • The best way to find out is to do a survey to get some feedback from the teachers involved. • We have drafted a questionnaire and asked the SCU to do a survey for us. • They have sent out the surveys just yesterday and most of us will receive them today. • We would appreciate it if you could fill them out and send them back to the SCU. • Our population is only 22, so each form counts! • Should the form also be distributed to tutors?
Ethics Education • For the purposes of this Forum, I requested the course coordinators of all Year 1 courses to share their (or their colleagues’) experience very briefly so we could get some preliminary feedback for discussion.
Ethics Education • Three questions: • Which of the 5 values did you emphasize the most in your course? • Which teaching methods did you use to illustrate the values? • Was there any discernible impact on of your efforts on enhancing students’ awareness of ethical issues?
IS Department • Which values? • “Stressed all 5 values because we felt all of them are important”. • Which teaching methods? • “20-30 minutes of formal lecture time to explain the values and their importance in the context of information systems.” • Used case studies and asked students to debate over certain ethical dilemmas. • Assessment? • It expanded students’ understanding of ethics. • Students found the debates very interesting.
MS Department • Which values? • “No particular emphasis on any particular core value”. • Which teaching methods? • Students were exposed to ethical issues from working through open-ended questions in one assignment and in the mid-term test. • Assessment? • Students became more aware of the issues in the second assessment.
AC Department • Which values? • Integrity/Honesty, which is most important to accountants who are supposed to present the fairest picture of a company’s financial health. • Which teaching methods? • Lecturing with illustrative examples. • Assessment? • “Commensurate to the importance of the ethics topic in our course…”
MA Department • Which values? • “Tend to focus more on the general concept of Business Ethics rather than any one of the five values.” • Which teaching methods? • Lecturing directly on what Business Ethics is and why it is necessary • Also had a tutorial case on how the business ethics concepts could be applied into the work environment. • Assessment? • “Students appreciate learning the concepts as they think it will improved their work life in the future.”
EF Department • Which values? • Fairness; Integrity; Responsibility • Which teaching methods? • Explain the 5 values to them which are mentioned in the syllabus, and lay down the implications of adopting these values. • Examples illustrating different values • Case study on the determinants of Happiness • Assessment? • Class discipline was (slightly) better than before. • Students find the case study interesting.
Ethics Education • While integrating values into our course material is important, what is even more important is our interactions with our students. • Students are affected much more by what we do, rather than what we say. • Examples: • Some useful websites for resources on ethics can be found on the Year 1 instructor’s web page.
