Review of Comparison/Contrast • Before the First Assessment, we started to discuss how we compare and contrast. • We talked about how when we compare, we are talking about two things that are similar. When we contrast, we are talking about the differences between two things. • We also talked about how there are two ways to compare and contrast. One way is to use the block organization where we group all of the similarities together in one block and all of the differences in another block. • The other way is to use point by point organization where you write about similarities and differences by subtopic or by their differences.
Comparison Signals • Let’s read the paragraph on pg. 114 to get an idea of how comparison signals are used to help readers understand similarities and differences. • Let’s go through the questions at the bottom of pg. 114.
Comparison Signals • Looking at pg. 115, we can see the comparison signals that work as sentence connectors, coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions, etc. • Sentence connectors can appear in different places in a sentence. Also: often in the middle or end of the sentence Too: usually comes at the end of the sentence
Comparison Signals • Some of these signals act like adjectives because they describe nouns. These are words like similar/equal/the same. • Some signals act like prepositions because they come in front of nouns. These are phrases like similar to/(just) like/the same as.
Comparison Signals • Some signals like equally act as adverbs that describe verbs or other adverbs. • Finally, paired conjunctions are always used together. It’s important to understand that the word that comes after the second conjunction must be the same part of speech as the word that comes after the first conjunction. Examples: The two cities are both trendy (adjective) and hip. (adjective) The two cities have both positive and negative features. (adjectives)
Practice • Let’s practice using some of these signals in Practice 1 C on pg. 117.
Contrast Signals • These signals point out differences. Let’s look at pg. 118 for the list. • Sentence connectors can work to point out differences through connecting two independent clauses. Some of these connectors are in contrast, on the other hand, and however. • When there are two opposite ideas, we can use but or yet to show the difference as coordinating conjunctions. • Let’s read through the rest of pg. 119 to see how other contrast signals are used.
