  5. Academic Membership of MIGR • Statute change approved by Minister. • Research Graduate School Committee (RGSC) now Graduate Research Committee (GRC). • Academic membership details of MIGR approved by Academic Board. • MIGR will comprise academic supervisors and the current Monash Research Graduate School.

  6. Academic Membership of MIGR • Academic membership requires: • Staff to be “research-active for the purposes of HDR supervision” (minimum 1 paper/year) • Completed requirements at least for Level 1 Supervisor accreditation • From January 1, 2012 all candidature applications need two supervisors to be named for approval. • Membership Sub-Committee of GRC in place. • Special cases for MIGR membership can and will be considered by this Sub-Committee.

  7. Academic Membership of MIGR • Faculty recommendations for “research active” approved. • All measures are annual average over three years unless otherwise stated • Mostly using BI to check – in some cases we need help from faculties or campuses. • Membership will date from July 1, 2012 for 5 years. • From July 1, all new supervisors will need to be members of MIGR.

  10. MIGR Update 10

  11. Academic Membership of MIGR • The policy framework governing membership of MIGR will be the same on all campuses and will apply equally to adjunct staff. • MIGR membership will include a special category for Emeritus Professors. They will remain members of MIGR for 5 years following their retirement and longer if they continue to meet active researcher criteria. • External HDR supervisors may become Associate Members of MIGR at the discretion of the Membership Sub-Committee. MIGR Update

  12. Academic Membership of MIGR • Supervisors who are MIGR members may face deregistration for poor quality supervision. • Have devised an intervention process for supervisors who may be ‘at risk’ of deregistration for poor supervision. • Identification is through either • The receipt of three independent complaints about the supervisor from students • An extremely poor ratio of discontinuing and transferring students to completing students. MIGR Update

  13. Academic Membership of MIGR • Request made to relevant Associate Dean to investigate and report. • Review of this report by Membership Sub-Committee who might decide: • No action is needed; • Chair or nominee and Associate Dean to meet with the supervisor; • Interviews of the supervisor’s students; • Temporary freeze on new supervision arrangement and establishment of a Performance Development Plan; • Review of plan after 6 months. MIGR Update

  14. The threshold begins at 75% for those who have had a total of 6 completions and/or unsuccessful separations. Further, that the threshold decreases by 1% with each successive completion / unsuccessful separation (as set out in Table 1). Outcomes will be analysed for all primary supervisors and co-supervisors (at least 50%). Outcomes occurring less than six months into candidature will be excluded from the calculation. Threshold to Define Unsuccessful Separations MIGR Update 14

  15. Table 1: Threshold (%of unsuccessful separations) used to identify ‘at risk’ HDR supervisors MIGR Update 15

  16. Academic Membership of MIGR • Existing supervision arrangements will not be affected by these changes. • Non-members can be associate supervisors up to 25% and for up to three students. • Interesting to note the TEQSA Qualification Standard 1.8: “academics who are the primary supervisors of students are actively carrying out research and publishing in the relevant discipline area” MIGR Update

  17. Coursework and/or Training • Each PhD program will have at least 3 months of coursework and/or training. • All students in a discipline will have the same program requirement, no matter what campus they are on. • Half the University will introduce this in 2013, the other half in 2014 (including Medicine), with remote campuses having a one-year lag in implementation if needed. MIGR Update

  18. Coursework and/or Training • Proposals went to Course and Programs Sub-committee in mid-April. • There will be some centrally-run training: • exPERT • Leadership • Research Integrity • Project management (Science led) • Science communication (Science led) • MIGR are running some trials on these this year to get them ready for 2013.
