Homestead Act • Government program that gave land to settlers for free if they would live on the land for 5 years. • Used as a way to get people to move West.
Trading Posts • Cities originally served as place for people to meet and exchange goods.
Grandfather Clause • Black Code developed in the South that only allowed people to vote if their Grandfather voted, thus excluding all African Americans. • Today means that people are adopted into a policy
Jim Crow Laws • Created to keep African Americans as second class citizens. • Prevented them from intermarrying, having certain jobs, and limited their rights.
Sharecropping • A method where individuals work the land in exchange for a portion of the crop. • Used to prevent African-Americans from gaining land and status after they gained their freedom.
Separate but Equal • Clause that stated it was acceptable (ok) to allow segregation (separate whites from blacks) as long as things were equal. • Established after the Plessy vs. Ferguson Case.
Urbanization • The expansion and growth of cities. • Began after the development of the railroads as people moved to cities in order to work in factories.
Overcrowding • Became a major problem in the cities because they were too small to house everyone. • This led to other problems in the cities such as crime, disease, fires, etc.
Row Houses • Homes that were built very close together in order to fit a large number of people in a small area. • Used during Urbanization to make room for all of the people in the cities.
Water • It was lacking in the cities during this time and was expensive and hard to get. • Also led to an increase in damaging fires.
Jobs • Number one reason people moved to the cities. • They were sick of living in the countries on farms and moved to the cities to find a better life.
Disease • A major problem in the cities because so many people were living so close together. • Modern medicine did not have a cure for these problems.
Street Cars • First mode of public transportation to get people to factories. • Subways and Elevated trains were also used for the first time and were sometimes dangerous.
Crime • Problem for the first time in cities because so many people were living close to one another and many were desperate to survive. • Led to the development of police.
Nativism • The belief that native born citizens are better than immigrants. • Leads to racism against immigrants in the US as they begin to come for jobs.
Chinese Exclusion Act • Created by the US government and limited the number of Chinese immigrants allowed to enter the US. • Only teachers, merchants, students, and a few other groups were allowed.
China • Their immigrants experienced more racism because their culture was so different.
Ellis Island • A stopping point (on the East Coast) for immigrants enter the US. • They had to undergo medical and psychological inspection in order to be admitted.
