You are a STAR Sharing The Academic Responsibility
Check your child’s planner and notebook DAILY! This is the easiest way for parents and teachers to communicate.
Establish a routine. Have a specific time and place for homework activities. Make time to talk to your child about school.
Call out spelling words and review vocabulary daily. Make a game of it. Create flash cards. Give practice tests.
Ask questions about your child’s reading selection for the week. What is the title of the story? Who is the main character? What is the conflict or problem in the story and how is it resolved? Why do you think the author wrote the story?
Go over math homework. Check your child’s math homework for accuracy. Go over basic math facts. Purchase flash cards or better yet, have your child create them with index cards.
Ask your child specific questions about his or her day. What did you talk about in Science? What did you talk about in Math? What did you talk about in Social Studies?
Show your child you are interested in his or her entire day! Ask: What did you have for lunch today? Who sat next to you? What did you play at recess? What did you do in your special area class?
Keep the lines of communication open! Now that you are in touch with your child’s school day, keep in touch with your child’s teachers. Do you have pictures or souvenirs related to your child’s units of study that you can have your child share? Do you yourself have any special skills or talents that you can bring to your child’s class? If you do, let the teacher know!
We love our parent volunteers! Being involved in some way with school is just one way that shows your child school is a priority. PTO, School Council, class parent…the possibilities are endless!
