  1. Study of D*+ Natural Line WidthCarol FabbyAdvisors: Mike Sokoloff, Brian Meadows, Rolf Andreassen, Zach HuardUniversity of Cincinnati Babar Physics Jamboree University of Cincinnati 24 April 2010

  2. What is Known About D* Width? • Previous Studies • ACCMOR: 90% CL upper limit to Γ of 131 keV • CLEO: 1st measurement Γ = 96 ± 4 (stat) ± 22 (syst) keV • Current Measure of Width • BaBar Detector, Release 24 Data • Decay Channel D*+→ D0πs+ D0→ K-π+ Carol Fabby BaBar Physics Jamboree University of Cincinnati 24 April 2010

  3. Event Selection For ΔM, using sub-ranges of D0 to isolate the signal • πsDCH Hits > 12 • Kaon DCH Hits > 20 • Pion DCH Hits > 20 • Pion SVT OK • Kaon SVT OK • Slow Pion SVT OK • πs , veto on Is Gamma Conversion • πs , veto on Is Dalitz Conversion • -3 < πs Pull for dE/dx (DCH) < 2 • -3 < πs Pull for dE/dx (SVT) < 2 Carol Fabby BaBar Physics Jamboree University of Cincinnati 24 April 2010

  5. Fitting Methods • Use Monte Carlo to determine Resolution Function • Fit – Addition of: • Signal: 3 Gaussians with independent means and widths • Background: Threshold (Argus) • Real Data Signal • Signal: Breit-Wigner Convolved with (MC Resolution) x (1 + ε) • Background: Threshold (Argus) • Resolution Function Parameters from MC • Means allowed to float using a common offset, to account for difference between MC and RD mean • (1 + ε) used to allow for scale difference of resolution between MC and RD • Carol Fabby BaBar Physics Jamboree University of Cincinnati 24 April 2010

  6. Examples of Typical Fits and Pull Distribution Plots • Carol Fabby BaBar Physics Jamboree University of Cincinnati 24 April 2010

  7. ε • Carol Fabby BaBar Physics Jamboree University of Cincinnati 24 April 2010

  8. Results • 101.27 keV + _______ +_________ • Unanswered questions • How will resolution change with non-signal MC added to current cc MC? • How will fit change with a set offset value? • What is causing the systematic variation in the pull distribution plots? • Carol Fabby BaBar Physics Jamboree University of Cincinnati 24 April 2010
