The great discovery made by Pavlov was that any stimulus, even one not remotely connected with an inborn reflex, when paired with a stimulus inextricably linked to an inborn reflex response, could take the place of the original stimulus. In this case, the sound of the bell (originally neutral, producing no salivation) is repeatedly paired with meat powder (the unconditioned stimulus) which calls forth the salivation ref24
