What is SAGE? What is included in SAGE Summative?
SAGE Summative • There are Three (3) Main Systems in SAGE Summative: • TIDE: Test Information Distribution Engine • School Test Coordinators and Principals • Managing Students and Teacher Rosters in SAGE Summative • TDS: Test Delivery System • Teachers, School Test Coordinators, Principals • Test Administrator Interface • Student Interface • ORS: Online Reporting System • School Test Coordinators and Principals • Managing Participation Reports in SAGE Summative
28+ SAGE Summative Training Sections for 2014 • Elementary 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and Sp. Ed. Team Leaders • Jan. 28, 29, 30 (6 Sections) • Secondary LA, MA, SC, and Sp. Ed. Dept. Chairs • Feb. 10, 11 (4 Sections) • School Test Coordinators and School Principals • Feb. 18, 19 (3 Sections) • Other Elementary and Secondary Teachers • Feb. 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 27, Mar. 4, 5,6 (15 Sections) • Other sections to be added as needed
Today’s SAGE Summative Training • Important Information about SAGE Summative Assessments • SAGE Summative Testing Resources and Accommodations • Administering SAGE Summative Assessments and Training Tests • Students’ Access to SAGE Summative Tests and Training Tests
2014 SAGE Summative Training:Important Information About SAGE Summative Assessments SAGE Summative Trainings February and March 2014
Two Types of Summative SAGE Assessments Grade-Based Assessments • ELA 3-11 • Mathematics 3-8 • Science 4-8 Course-Based Assessments • Secondary Math I • Secondary Math II • Secondary Math III • Physics • Chemistry • Biology • Earth Science
Testing Time Estimates Every student must be given sufficient time to complete each SAGE Summative test. Make-up and completion sessions must be scheduled to allow students to complete testing. Many students will complete testing within the estimated times.
Testing Time Estimates English Language Arts • Elementary Writing Section - up to 90 minutes • Secondary Writing Section – approx. 90 minutes Reading, Listening and Language Section • Elementary – approx. 90 minutes • Secondary – approx. 90 minutes Mathematics and Science – approx. 90 minutes each
Testing Sessions • Testing schedules within the testing window are determined by schools. • All tests may be split among multiple testing sessions/class periods • Students may pause the test at any time • Students will begin on day 2, where they left on day 1 • Students will NOT be able to change answers on previous day’s work • The teacher (proctor) who approves students to enter test sessions within the TA interface must be in the room with the students.
Timeout Rule • A student’s test will log out after 30 minutes of inactivity • Any activity by the student will prevent their test from timing out (e.g., mouse movement) • After the test times out, the pause rule begins
Pause Rule • Questions cannot be viewed or changed after test is paused for 20 minutes • The Teacher (Proctor) can see amount of time paused on TA Interface • When the student logs back in, they will be returned to their first unanswered question, but cannot return to previously answered questions • The writing section of ELA has no pause rule
Defining Participation A student must answer at least 6 questions to be considered a “participant” in the assessment. A student must finish the assessment to receive a score.
Opt-Out Language • Refused to Test • Student is considered a participant in the test • Score marked as non-proficient • Impact data will be reviewed in the future
Adaptive Testing • The adaptive testing engine used for SAGE Summative assessments will be more robust in 2014-2015. • This operational field test sets the baseline for student achievement and growth going forward. • Student-level scores will be provided and used for accountability.
First Year - 2014 In order to provide the data needed to create the vertical scale, students will see items from lower and higher grades. These items will not be included in student scores.
ELA and Literacy Two Sections: • Reading, Language, Listening • Writing
ELA and Literacy Reading • Single and Paired Passages • No text-to-speech for passages, or excerpts from passages in items • Literary/Informational ratio follows Core Listening • Short (1 min) passages: dialogue, discussion, etc. Language • Edit draft passage of student writing • Vocabulary
ELA and Literacy Writing Student writing will draw on information and evidence from passages Two Compositions: • Opinion/Argument – longer response • Informative/Explanatory – shorter response
Mathematics Grades 3-8, Secondary I, Secondary II, Secondary III • All items aligned to the Utah Core Standards • Range of DOK and Elements of Rigor across all Domain, Clusters, and Standards
First year - 2014 Math Linking Items • Grade 5: Short calculator segment at the end of test. Can ONLY use onscreen calculator. • Grade 7: Students may have a short non-calculator segment at the beginning of test.
Elementary Mathematics Grades 3-4: Calculator NOT allowed. • Not available on screen • Bringing a calculator or a calculation table is a modification. (Jordan District does not allow modified testing.) • Based on the Utah State Standards, students in these grades need to build basic computation skills and knowledge.
Elementary Mathematics Grade 5 and 6: Calculator allowed on certain items. First segment • Calculator NOT allowed • Longer segment Second segment: • Calculator available ONLY onscreen • Cannot bring in their own • Shorter segment
Elementary Mathematics • Reference sheets will no longer be available or necessary for the grades 3-6 Elementary Math SAGE. • Any tested standard requiring students to apply a specific formula will have the formula embedded in the item. • Standards that state: “Apply the formula”
Secondary Mathematics • Reference sheets will no longer be available or necessary for Secondary Math SAGE. • Any item that is appropriate for students to have a formula will have the formula embedded in the item. • Calculator will be available on the test • Student may bring in and use a calculator that was used during classroom instruction. • No phone or internet capable calculators are permitted.
Secondary Mathematics Grade 7: Calculator allowed on certain items. May have a first segment • Calculator would NOT be allowed • Shorter segment Second segment: • Can bring in their own • Longer segment
Science • All items aligned to a Standard, Objective, and ILO • DOK 1-4 items spread across all Standards and Objectives • Moving toward a 40%-60% split between MC and CR items for each student • Simulations allow for in-depth, experiment-like conditions allowing assessment of science skills in a setting approximating authenticity
Science • Calculators allowed for all tests • Students may use a calculator they are familiar with • A scientific calculator will be provided as an on-line tool • No phone or internet capable calculators are permitted • Reference sheets are available for Chemistry and Physics • Download and use throughout the year • http://www.schools.utah.gov/assessment/Adaptive-Assessment-System/Science.aspx; http://sageportal.org • Chemistry reference sheet displays periodic table
Training Test Purposes • Familiarize students and teachers with the design, format, procedures, accessibility features of the items found in the SAGE Summative assessments • Allow students to identify test setting preferences, schools can set those settings in advance of testing • Use the secure browser to certify that local technology configurations can deliver SAGE Summative assessments (e.g., network, hardware)
Item Types / Response Mechanism Machine scored constructed response (MSCR) • Equation Response • Matching • Graphic Response • Hot Spot Response • Drag and Drop Response • Evidence-based selected response (EBSR) Multiple Choice • Single select • Multiple select Constructed Response • Short Response • Extended Writing
Hardware Requirements • Headphones and keyboards are required for all students on all tests • External keyboards for recently purchased iPads have been ordered for schools • Headphones (elem.) and Earbuds (sec.) have been ordered for schools
