What is Hemophilia? • Hemophilia is caused by an abnormal gene causing bleeding in the joints. • Hemophilia slows down the blood clotting process and causes prolonged bleeding after injury
Symtoms • The symptoms change throughout your life. In babies they have the tendency to bruise easily. • It causes bleeding in the joints and muscles known as hemarthrosis • The effected joint becomes deformed • Hemophilia is more common in males than females
Hemophilia A • Hemophilia A is the most common type of hemophilia and occurs in 80% of hemophiliacs • A DNA defect on the X chromosome makes it so you don’t have enough clotting factor eight.
Hemophilia B • Hemophilia B is also known as Christmas disease and is about 12%-15% of hemophilia cases. • Caused by deficiency in coagulation factor nine • People with hemophilia B are less likely to have a severe case than those with hemophilia A.
