NAL Agricultural Thesaurus http://agclass.nal.usda.gov/agt/agt.htm • 2001, first edition • 2004 edition, over 62,000 terms with 35% lead-in terminology • Scope is agriculture, broadly defined, organized into 17 categories. • Updated annually on Jan 1st • Proposal system for changes to NALT • 2 FTE among 7 staff

  3. NAL Agricultural Thesaurus Users • AGRICOLA – NAL’s library catalog • USDA • Food Safety Research Information Office • Agricultural Research Information System • e-Extension (Land Grant Universities) • AgNIC – Agriculture Network Information Center

  4. NALT as Web Service • Official release of WS at NALT web site in Feb 2004 • WS initially developed to support AgNIC • AgNIC Search and Browse • AgNIC Calendar (in development)

  5. NALT as Web Service Organizations testing NALT WS: • Other USDA agencies • Food and Agricultural Organization of UN • Government of Canada • E-Extension • Other AgNIC partners

  6. NALT WS Applications AgNIC Search Search queries expanded to include relevant preferred terms via WS: “pig” is expanded to “pig or swine” “azalea” is expanded to “azalea or rhododendron”

  7. NALT WS Applications AgNIC Browse • Browse topics are drawn from Thesaurus • Web Service interface used as part of record generation.

  8. NALT WS management • Web Service uses Zope/Python toolkit to manage SOAP interface • Zope is also used to create AgNIC portal • MultiTes is used to administer NALT • WS automatically updates from MultiTes report files

  9. NALT WS Futures Enhance AgNIC search to explode search terms using Broader and Narrower relationships: “pig” expands to “pig or swine” “swine” expands “barrows or boars or gilts or piglets or sows”

  10. NALT WS Futures Integrate NALT WS into other AgNIC services: e.g., the Calendar AgNIC partners and other collaborators, USDA, e-Extension, etc., will implement NALT WS

  11. NALT WS Futures Release 2 expected Q4 2004 • Improved interoperability • Improved performance • Improved terminology management

  12. NALT WS Futures A new service: Suggest • Given a document, the Suggest WS will suggest relevant Thesauri terms for classification. • Suggested terms will be ranked as to appropriateness.
