UN-Water mECHANISm • United Nations inter-agency coordination mechanism. • Provides the platform to address the cross-cutting nature of water and maximize system-wide coordinated action and coherence. • Promotes coherence in UN system actions aimed at implementing the global development agenda eg. MDGs and JPOI. • Facilitating synergies and joint efforts, to maximize system-wide effectiveness of support provided to Member States.
UN-WATER membership • UN-Water currently counts 31 Members and 34 Partners. • Members are UN entities including those responsible for major funds and programmes, specialised agencies, regional commissions, conventions, etc. Other organizations outside of the UN system are Partners of UN-Water.
UN-WATER ORGANIZATION • Thematic Priority Areas (TPA): to address long-term issues • Task Forces (TF): to address time-bound issues • Multi-Agency Initiatives: implement specific initiatives requiring a multidisciplinary approach, eg. WWDR, JMP and GLAAS reports, Capacity Development to Support National Drought Management Policies Initiative • UN Awareness Campaigns: campaigns on freshwater and sanitation, eg. World Water Day, 22 March and World Toilet Day, 19 November
UN-WATER TPA Water QUALITY - objectives • enhance inter-agency collaboration and coordination in water quality related issues • support Governments and other stakeholders to address water quality challenges • monitor and report on the state of water quality • identify emerging water quality challenges and propose relevant responses • coordinated by UNEP

Unep MANDATE UNEP’s Core Mandate: … to keep the environment under review to inform policy makers and trigger action… Governing Council Decisions 25/2, 26/2, 26/14 and 27/11: … on the development, in collaboration with a wide array of partners, a knowledge management platform called UNEP Live to promote access to, and use environmental information in support of UNEP’s core mandate Governing Council Decision 27/3: … requesting the Executive Director to develop international water quality guidelines for ecosystems, in collaboration with Governments, scientific institutions, United Nations agencies and other relevant organizations, including the private sector, taking into account existing information while integrating, as appropriate, all relevant aspects of water management
