Basics of SSI • What is SSI? • SSI (enacted in 1999) is a system of support structured to ensure that all students gain sufficient understanding of the TEKS • The grade advancement requirements of SSI apply to: • Grade 3 (beginning in 2002-03) • Reading • Grade 5 (beginning 2004-05) • Reading • Mathematics • Grade 8 (beginning in 2007-08) • Reading • Mathematics
Basics of SSI • Under SSI, a student in Grade 3, 5 or 8 may only advance to the next grade level by: • Demonstrating proficiency in the applicable subject areas • i.e., passing the TAKS, TAKS-Accommodated, TAKS-M in Reading (Grade 3) or Reading and Math (Grade 5 and 8); OR • Unanimous decision of the GPC that the student is likely to perform at grade level at the end of the next year given additional accelerated instruction • Testing requirements: • Up to 3 testing opportunities in Spring and Summer • Accelerated instruction after each testing opportunity
Basics of SSI • Grade advancement testing is only part of SSI • SSI is an overall system of support for student academic achievement, which includes: • Informal and formal assessment of student needs at preceding grades (with early intervention activities to address those needs) • Continuous and ongoing evaluation by a variety of means • Research-based instructional programs • Targeted accelerated instruction informed by multiple testing opportunities and other means of evaluation • A GPC that decides on an individual student basis the most effective way to support a student’s academic achievement on grade level • A district-determined alternate assessment option for the third testing opportunity • Accelerated instruction plans for every student who does not meet the standard on the required grade advancement assessments after three opportunities (whether retained or promoted)
Basics of SSI • SSI requirements apply to: • All students who take TAKS • All students receiving special education services who take TAKS-Accommodated and TAKS-M • SSI requirements do NOT apply to: • Students receiving special education services who take TAKS-Alternate Teachers assess, make observations and provide remediation throughout the school year • Recent immigrant LEP students who have been exempted from state assessment by their LPAC (LEP-exempt)
Application/Reporting Requirements • ARI/AMI Application is the funding source for 2008-09 school year to target Reading and Math instruction • ARI/AMI Application for 2008-09 deadline to submit is September 30. • The Consolidated Reading Initiative Report (CRIR) is the end of year evaluation of how the funds were spent for the 2008-09 school year. • CRIR for 2008-09 will be due September 30, 2009. • ARI/AMI and CRIR are located in eGrants Production.
