  1. Digestion in the Stomach

  2. Esophagus • Covered in mucus lining • Food is squeezed down by peristalsis • Peristalsis • Wavelike movements of muscle contracts • Only works in 1 direction except when sick • Sphincter • At the end of the esophagus • Muscular ring • Lets food go into stomach

  3. Stomach • Muscles churn and mix with acids/enzymes to create chyme • Chyme • Thick liquid of food • Once chyme is of the right consistency, passes to small intestine • Water, salt, sugar and alcohol can be absorbed directly through stomach wall • Digestion of proteins occurs here

  4. Small Intestine • Almost all digestion and absorption occurs here • Food leaves via 2 tubes: • Capillaries • Carry blood • Absorb all nutrients except fats • Lacteals • Carry liquid called lymph • Absorb digested fats • 3 parts • Duodenum • Jejunum • Ileum

  5. Duodenum Bile added to chyme Pancreatic juices added to chyme

  6. Jejunum Place where maximum amount of food and water is absorbed

  7. Ileum Responsible for absorbing vitamin B12 Responsible for re-absorption of salts

  8. Digestion of Carbohydrates & Lipids In mouth by saliva In small intestine by pancreatic juices

  9. Large Intestine Food that isn’t digested (fiber) gets prepared for elimination Absorbs certain vitamins Maintains body's’ fluid balance Formation and storage of feces
