Username and Password • You are given access to the school’s computer network as a privilege, not a right. • Any work done using your school account is a representation of this school and must remain school appropriate. • You are responsible for your username and password. • You are responsible for anything (good or bad) that happens from your login. • Some words of advice: Keep your password PRIVATE!
What is a good password? • One that you can remember. • Use acronyms to help you remember your password: • 10sNE1? • (Tennis anyone?) • Ilmd,M&S • (I love my dogs, Max & Spot) • One that has a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. • One that is changed often. • Get in the habit of changing your password every week/month/quarter or when you think your privacy has been compromised.
Changing your Password • Press and hold [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Del] • Click on Change Password • Enter old password (school) • Enter new password • Enter new password again • OK
Acceptable Use Policy • “[You will be expected to follow guidelines which require] efficient, ethical and legal utilization of the network resources.” • Acceptable Use – supports education and research. • Privileges – inappropriate use will result in cancellation of use. • Security – notify teacher/principal, do not show, solve, or abuse. • Netiquette – be polite and appropriate. Do not disrupt. • Vandalism – harming data, equipment, network. • “If a student user violates any of these provisions, appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken, including termination of access.” ~ Student Handbook
Printing • Click on File / Print / Select appropriate printer. • Only press Print ONCE. • The network will place your print job in a queue (line) and will print it when all other print jobs in front of it are finished. • If it doesn’t print: • Check to make sure printer is on. • If it was off, turn it on and wait. You do not need to press print again. The network has already placed your print job in the queue. It will print. • Check to see if any lights are flashing on the printer. • If lights are flashing, read the prompt. Maybe the printer is simply out of paper or there may be a paper jam. • If other jobs are printing, but not yours, your print job hasn’t reached the front of the queue yet. Wait. • If there is absolutely no activity coming from the printer, ask a teacher.
Print what you Need • When printing, always preview the print job by pressing on the Print Preview icon. • From here you can see what will print and make any necessary changes such as orientation, pages, selection. • Check to see how many pages are scheduled to print. • If more pages are set to print than what you need: • Enter only the Pages you want to print. [1,3,6] or [5-12] • Highlight the text/picture you Want to print, then print Selection. http://youtu.be/ihrS4tswNbY
Saving • Save all your work to the H:/drive. • H:/12rbrown/… • Saving to My Documents doesn’t always save to your H:/ drive. • For example, sometimes the network will not recognize your account even though you were able to log in. • When this happens, your work gets saved to the computer’s hard drive. • ALWAYS make sure you can access your H:/drive. • It is best to use the Save As command rather than the Save command. • Save As gives you one last chance to confirm what you are doing before overwriting a saved document. • Save As also gives you the opportunity to make a duplicate copy of a document in another location, such as a flash drive.
Flash Drives • Insert your flash drive before logging on to a computer. • When saving to a flash drive, make sure you select the proper drive before saving. • To eject a flash drive: • Click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon located on the bottom right of the task bar. • Choose the correct USBMass Storage Device Drive. • Click on it, OK. Do Not Remove a Flash Drive by Pulling it out of the USB Port.
