The “Mental” Game • In a sport like hockey, 80% of the game is mental • Estimate how much time a week you commit to making yourself better in the skills required to play hockey • Estimate how much time a week you work on your “mental” game “Character is what you do when no one is looking”
Mental Toughness • Being in control of your thoughts • Thoughts directly impact your emotions and emotions directly influence the way you play • Being resilient • Definition: able to recoil or spring back into shape after bending, stretching, or being compressed • Having an unshakable confidence “Whether you think you can or think you can't - you are always right.” ~Henry Ford
Mental Toughness • Take 5 minutes and fill out the Self Assessment Form
Mental Toughness • Write down 5 statements you remember saying to yourself on the bench this year
Mental Toughness • The first step in improving your mental game is becoming aware of how you talk to yourself • Start keeping a journal at home that tracks your progress • Make it a goal to write 1 page in your journal a week • Answer questions like: • Did I get frustrated with myself? • Did I blame others? • Did I maintain focus for the entire practice or game? • Did I stick to my routine?
Tools for your Toolbox • There are 3 areas of mental toughness we will be teaching you this year: • Using your personal Power Statements to develop confidence and a positive self-image • Using Mental Visualization to practice “away” from the rink • Using Routine to teach focus and preparation
Power Statements • There is a powerful feedback loop that controls who we are: • Power Statements are meant to focus your thoughts on positive affirmations • Fill out the sheet “Your Personal Power Statements” Thoughts +/- +/- Emotions
Jeff Ovens – Power Statements • A: I play extremely hard. Other teams hate to play against me. • B: I am a leader. Other players look up to me. • C: I excel at “thinking” the game. I am always alert and aware.
Mental Visualization • NHL players are given homework every week by their “Mental Coaches” • Your homework: Score 20 different goals or saves a night before you go to bed
Routine • Start thinking about what your “routine” is before games and between shifts • Write down 3 routines you currently have that you want to keep • Before playing today put a stripe of white tape on your water bottle and write your “A” POWER STATEMENT on it • When you come to the bench after a shift sit down take a sip of water and read your power statement
Jets Cup • Today focus on using the mental skills we talked about • Start developing a routine where you focus on your positive power statements rather than negative self-talk • Play the way you need to play in order to achieve your goals
