Hebrews: Review • They’ve got everything to loose and everything to gain if they go forward and embrace Christ • Exposition and Exhortation alternates • Jesus superior to Moses, OT Law, OT Tabernacle and Temple… • Readers teeter-tottering • Readers may not have made a complete transition to Christ
Hebrews 3-4 • Comparison/Analogy: one aspect of Israel’s history—the wilderness generation • Old Covenant People of God (wilderness) • New Covenant People of God • Promised Rest • Message: as the New Covenant people of God, do not commit the same error as your Old Covenant ancestors and miss God’s promised salvation rest.
The Warnings in Hebrews • Hypothetical • Loss of Salvation (Arminian) • Not Truly Saved (Calvinism) • Loss of Reward • What sin are they in danger of committing? • Outright refusal to follow Christ, willful turning away from Christ
Hebrews 6.4-6 • “They have been enlightened” • “Tasted the heavenly gift” • “Shared in the Holy Spirit” • “Tasted the goodness of God’s word” • “Tasted the powers of the coming age” • “Fall away”
Covenant and the Bible • God acts to establish a relationship with his people; he “adopts” them as his people. • There are conditions that must be met in order to maintain that relationship. • God’s promises for those who live/fail to live within the covenant relationship.
