Why Another Letter to the Corinthians? • Apparently some have responded positively to 1 Corinthians. • But Paul receives news that his authority as an apostle is being challenged by some. • He then writes a “painful/tearful letter” (2 Cor 2:4) • Paul receives word that many have responded and repented of their treatment of Paul • But many are still opposing him 2 Cor (4th) • Occasion nature not theological diatribe
2 Corinthians – 2 Letters or 1? • Chaps. 1-9: positive in tone • Chaps. 10-13: negative in tone, harsh • Most extended treatment of giving (no tithe 10% mentioned) 2 Cor 8-9 generosity out of gratitude to Christ • Theme: Glory through suffering!
Where would you deliver the letter to the “Galatians” • North Galatia – ethnic Galatia in Northern Turkey • South Galatia – the Roman Province of Galatia (extends South to Mediterranean Sea)
When Was Galatians written? • Books arranged by length not chronological • If Galatians early first letter Paul wrote, if late then 1 Thess. first • The important factor is Acts 15-Jerusalem council—Gentiles and Mosaic law • Gal 1 Acts 9-10 Gal 2 Acts 11 Acts 15
