Overview • We will discuss following problems: • Chapter 15 “Probability Rules” (Page 404) # 8, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18 • All recitation PowerPoint slides available at here
Chapter 15 (Page 404): #8: Dogs: 24 (8 males); cats: 18 (6 males). An animal is selected randomly. Find the probability: • The pet is male, given it is a cat The total number of animals is 24 + 18 = 42 • The pet is cat, given it is female • The pet is female, given it is a dog
Chapter 15 (Page 405): #13: 70% kids have a fever, 30% kids with fever have sore throats. What is the probability that a kid has a fever and a sore throats?
Chapter 15 (Page 405): #14: 20% of cars have faulty pollution control systems. The cost of repairing exceeds $100 about 40% of the time. What is the probability that a driver ends up paying more than $100 to repair when doing car inspection?
Chapter 15 (Page 405): #16: Paly cards: There are play cards in total. From top to bottom: Clubs, Spades, Hearts, Diamonds.
Chapter 15 (Page 405): #16 Questions: Pick up 3 cards at random from a deck. Find the probability: • You get no aces • You get all hearts • The third card is your first red card • You have at least one diamond
Chapter 15 (Page 405): #17: A junk box contains a dozen old batteries, with 5 totally dead. You start picking batteries one at a time and testing them. Find the probability: • The first two you choose are both good • At least one of the first three works • The first four you pick all work • You have to pick 5 batteries in order to find one that works
Chapter 15 (Page 405): #18: Shirts size: medium (4), large (10), extra-large (6). You want a medium for two persons. Find the probability • The first two you grab are the wrong sizes • The first medium you find is the third one you check • The first four shirts you pick are all extra-large • At least one of the first four shirts you check is a medium
