  1. 1.1 Coordinate Systems and Graphs Forms of Equations Convert the generic equationfrom General Form to Standard Form. Ax + By = C • According to this text: • Standard Form is: y = mx + b • General Form is: Ax + By = C • Converting from General Form to Standard Formcan be done using simple algebra.

  2. 1.1 Coordinate Systems and Graphs Convert the equation from General Form to Standard Form. 2x + 3y = 3 • 8x – 4y = 6

  3. 1.1 Coordinate Systems and Graphs Intercepts Find the intercepts algebraically. 8x – 4y = 6 y = -⅖x+ 3 • An intercept occurs when: • A line crosses an axis • When a zero (0) is replaced for one variable and the equation is solved for the other variable. • Make sure to write this as an ordered pair!!

  4. 1.1 Coordinate Systems and Graphs Word Problem Sketch the graph. What interpretation can be given to the y – intercept of the graph of the equation? Approximately what percent of college freshmen entering in 2005 intended to major in biology? In what year did 4.9% of entering college freshmen intend to major in biology? • The percent of college freshmen who enter college intending to major in biology has increased steadily in recent years. The percent, y, who enter college x years after 2000 intending to major in general biology is approximated by the linear equation: y = 0.15x + 3.85.

  5. 1.1 Homework • Pgs. 7 – 8#19 – 26, 31 – 34, 41, 49
