  2. Do You Know… What is the opposite for each word below: Day Happy Open Stop What do we call word pairs that are opposites?

  3. Numbers Have Opposites Too What are the opposites of these numbers” 42 16 144 The opposite of a positive number is a negative number. The opposite of a negative number is a positive number.

  4. Altitude If sea level is considered to be 0 feet, the distance above sea level will be measured in positive feet. The distance below sea level is measured in negative feet or feet below sea level.

  5. Back to the Sailboats • Open your math journal to page 303 • Look at your sailboats and draw conclusions based on the changes to the ordered pairs

  6. Back to the Sailboats • Now think about the changes that will occur if we use positive and negative numbers in the ordered pairs. • What changes do you expect to see?

  7. Back to the Sailboats • Working with a partner, complete pages 306 and 307. • After you draw your sailboats, compare the differences to the original drawing. • Write a conclusion based on your data on the bottom of page 307

  8. Back to the Sailboats • Translations are slides that move the shape from side to side or up and down, but do not turn it in any way • Reflections are mirror images and move in the opposite way of the original shape

  9. Back to the Sailboats • The transformations on page 303 are enlargements of the original figure. • The transformations on page 307 are translations and reflections of the figure.

  10. Mega Battleship! • Open your math journal to page 308. • Play battleship with a partner. • Be sure to use all of the quadrants of the grid.
