Connections between CS and other disciplines • Issues to keep in mind: • Cannot just be a service provider – have to participate in a true collaboration • Need to overcome cultural barriers (e.g. between life scientists and CS/engineers) – on publishing, on data sharing • Need to identify problems that require comparable contributions, novel developments from each side • Need to educate each side on accepted practices, e.g. on evaluation • As computer science broadens its base, this will require changes in curriculum and changes in type of student • Students may not know, or need to know, all parts of computer science, especially if they have to acquire knowledge of a different area • Need to adjust curriculum to enable this
