  1. Symbiosis of IT and Other Disciplines Janette R. Hill, The University of Georgia

  2. What is IT? • The theory and practice of design, development, utilization, management and evaluation of processes and resources for learning (Seels & Richey, 1994) • IT (sic) is more than the sum of its parts. It is a systematic way of designing, carrying out, and evaluating the total process of learning and teaching in terms of specific objectives, based on research in human learning and communication, and employing a combination of human and nonhuman resources to bring about more effective instruction (Commission on IT, 1970, p. 21)

  3. What/who is informing the work? • Lots of folks! • Educational Psychology • Psychology • Education • Communication • Management • Computer Science • Information Systems

  4. Those with closer, more traditional ties to IT Educational Psychology Psychology Learning Sciences Traditionally, a bit further away, but important Information Systems Information Science Architectural Design But who/what is leading the charge?

  5. Implications for IT

  6. What is IT • “Metafield” • No primary focus • Benefits to diversity • Multiple perspectives • Multiple skills • Rich resources • Costs associated with diversity • Direction difficult to discern • Difficult to “rally the troops”

  7. Who is leading the charge? • Learning Sciences • Educational Psychology • Psychology • Computer Science

  8. Look to Others to Inform IT • Tom Carroll • Learning place • Disruptive technologies create possibilities • Partners in learning • Bill McDonough • Being “less bad” is no good • Cradle to cradle design…

  9. Cradle to grave Expert to novice via brute force Universal solutions (one size fits all) LOTS of waste Efficiency Constrained learning Cradle to cradle Learners are energy exporters Individual solutions Reusable objects (e.g., learning obj) Effectiveness Abundant learning Cradle-to-Cradle for IT

  10. Find our “Niche” in the Mix! • We have a unique perspective -- but what is it? What are we bringing to the symbiotic relationship? • If we serve as a bridge, what is the purpose? • With whom do we align ourselves?

  11. More Discussion at 11am! Janette R. Hill janette@coe.uga.edu
