Band Stereotypes By: Anna Catherine Volk
Most people think that band is pointless because it can’t help you in life. People also think, “Why are those band kids complaining? Band can’t be that hard can it?”
The band works EXTREMELY hard. We have practice everyday except for Wednesday from the beginning of 5th block until 6. We also have competitions almost every Saturday, and the Saturdays that we don’t have competitions, we have 8-6 practices.
Also, band CAN help you in life. It teaches you how to effectively multi-task and have discipline. In marching band we have to memorize complicated music and play it perfectly WHILE watching our drum majors to get the tempo WHILE staying in step WHILE remembering where we are going. This also includes any visuals we might have and we have to keep perfect spacing between the people on either side of you. Plus on competition days we get the added bonus of wearing scratchy uncomfortable uniforms!
It also teaches you how to take criticism. I’m going to tell you right now we get yelled at a lot. So much sometimes, that by the end of practice it is not uncommon for people to be swearing, crying, or both. But really this helps you because eventually you learn how to not take it so personally and just fix what you were doing wrong.
Lots of people also think that band kids are just nerds, and all we ever do ever is make music jokes that no one else gets.
Yeah…ok I’m not going to lie that stereotype is actually true.
As you can see, band is not as easy as you think. It does help you life and though it might seem pointless to you it isn’t to us. We don’t stay in band for ourselves we made a commitment not to our band director but to each other. We don’t practice almost everyday for our selves we do it for our band because there is no “I”in BAND.
