  1. The Brain and Behavior Connection Psych 1

  2. Video • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v-IMSKOtoE (power of thought) • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDMwpVUhxAo (science of love)

  3. Nature vs. Nurture • Biological Perspective- emphasizes the influence of biology on behavior • Sensory Areas • Motor Areas • Association Areas • Heredity • Neurotransmitters • Hormones

  4. Brain Structures • The Hindbrain- lower portion of the brain • Involved in many vital functions • i.e.- heart rate, respiration, balance • Includes: • Medulla- heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing • Pons- regulating body movement, attention, sleep, and alertness • Cerebellum- balance and coordination

  5. Brain Structures • The Midbrain: involved in vision and hearing • Includes: • Part of the Reticular Activating System- attention, sleep, and arousal

  6. Brain Structures • The Forebrain: these structures are what makes it possible for humans to engage in complex thinking processes • Includes: • Thalmus- relay station for sensory info; from eyes, ears, sense organs, pain to the upper levels of the brain • Hypothalmus- regulate body temp, stores nutrients, motivation and emotion, hunger, thirst, caring for offspring, sex drive, and aggression

  7. Brain Structures • The Forebrain (cont.) • Limbic System- learning, memory, emotion, hunger, sex, and aggression

  8. Brain Structures • Cerebrum- crowing glory of the brain, accounts for ~70% of the weight, surface contains ridges and valleys • Cerebral cortex- outer layer of the brain, part that makes us uniquely human (it’s the part that thinks!) • Also involves memory, language, emotions, complex motor functions, perception

  9. Brain Structures • Corpus Callosum- connects the two hemispheres of the brain • Amygdala- emotion and aggression, teens rely on this for decision making • Pre-frontal cortex- decision making, often called the ‘CEO’

  10. Composed of 2 sides (hemispheres) • Connected by the corpus callosum • Each hemisphere is composed of 4 lobes. • frontal lobe-motor functions • parietal lobe-sensory area • occipital lobe-primary visual area • temporal lobe-auditory area

  11. Language Abilities • Broca’s area-located in the frontal lobe. It enables us to move our lips when speaking. When damaged, people speak slowly and with difficulty but comprehension is good. • Wernicke’s area-located in the temporal lobe. It pieces together sounds and sights. Damage to this area makes it difficult to understand speech.

  12. Association Areas • Shapes info into something meaningful
