NBPTS Mission • Maintain a high and rigorous standards for what teachers should know and can do • Provide a national voluntary system to assess and certify teachers who meet those standards • Advocate related education reforms to integrate National Board Certification into American education and to capitalize on the expertise of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs)
What is it? • High, rigorous standards for what teachers should know and demonstrate • Designed to retain, reward and advance accomplished teachers through a voluntary system of advanced certification

The Assessment • A portfolio of classroom practice • An assessment of content knowledge administered at a computer-based testing center. The assessment process for National Board Certification consists of two components and can take the better part of a year to complete:
Portfolio Entries • Written work, videos and student work samples Most portfolios require something similar to: 1. Student Growth Analysis 2. Small Group Video + Analysis 3. Whole Class Video + Analysis 4. Documented Accomplishments
Classroom-Based Portfolio • Shows evidence of meeting NBPTS standards through classroom work • Includes student work samples, videotapes of classroom interactions • Written description, analysis and reflection provides a window into candidate’s actions and how they think
Assessment Center • Six questions, 30 min. each • Subject specific (content) • Test age-appropriate, content appropriate strategies

Professional Certification and National Board Certification Residency Certificate: • Teaching certificates issued after Sept 2000. • Residency holders must complete a Professional Certificate program within five years of completing provisional status. • By earning National Board certification, residency holders will be granted the professional certificate.
National Board and Professional Certification are not the same Residency Certificate: based on initial standards for new educators Professional Certificate: based on more advanced standards and promotes career growth goals National Board Certification: focused on the highest standards for accomplished teaching by showing excellence in the classroom and in professional life
What do I need to do to become a National Board candidate? • Check eligibility: • 3 Years of K-12 teaching experience • Access to at least 6 students in the area in which you are attempting certification • License to teach in the state • Possess a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution. • Pay fee: $2,500 (plus $65 application fee)
Requirements for UWB National Board Application Product • Completion of at least 30 credits by autumn quarter
Support Group • Nancy and NBCT facilitate support group • UW Seattle –Five Saturday Meetings • UWB Cohort meetings twice a month • September through March • You do not need to certify through National Board to graduate • Cohort Expectations
Upcoming Tasks(Due before our September meeting) • Attend WEA Jumpstart • Apply for Washington State no-interest loan • Register for National Board ($65) • Register for 3-5 credits for Autumn Quarter • Download and print out your certificate area portfolio directions and standards • Study the standards for your certificate • Complete an “entry cover sheet” for each entry • Make a plan for support from your family and friends
