HEL Service Packages • HEL offers two different service packages at the Headway House, designed to address the different scales of need of the client group • Core Membership (Attender Placement)S/T & L/T is offered on the basis that, at assessment, the person is unable to access the community at large for either social or occupational engagement • Support Group/Volunteering Membership which involves access to a weekly peer group meeting facilitated by therapy staff, serving the purpose of providing advocacy and advice as well as promoting peer-led counselling on all issues pertinent to life after brain injury. Support Group Membership is often combined, as part of the package, with a voluntary placement in the centre
Core Member - Attender Service • The majority of HEL’s Core Members cannot live independently and will not be able to return to work. The aim of the centre is to acknowledge this situation and to counter it by supporting the members – even those with the most severe impairments – in taking on responsible, important work within the centre. HEL defines this work as follows: • Providing specialist peer support, befriending and advice for others with ABI • Providing training and work experience opportunities for people working towards careers in health and care professions (currently in excess of 40% of the centre’s volunteers) • Maintaining a forum for community engagement across the locality.
Support Group/Volunteering Members Service • Many of the Support Group/Volunteering Members may be working towards a return to work or volunteering elsewhere, but may require extended assistance with this project • The Support Group/Volunteering placement is designed to provide the kind of support people need in regaining confidence and skills for work outside. The Support/ Volunteering Group process includes: • Regaining a working timetable and routine • Taking on significant responsibilities at the centre • Working towards achievable aims and goals • Attending weekly a peer support group • Confronting psychosocial and behavioural difficulties in a supportive environment.
Goal Setting and Outcome Measurement • HEL sets goals in conjunction with attenders and group support members • Goals are measured and recorded formally on a monthly and six monthly basis • HEL’s suite of tools to measure goals and achievements includes: • Mental health/mood questionnaires (where relevant) • Quality of life questionnaires (World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale) [WHO QOL-BREF]) • Attitude questionnaire • Recording of positive practical activity and behaviour/Universal Goals • Measurement of personal goals (functional and occupational).
What distinguishes HEL from other day services? • The target group of HEL is people who have acquired brain injury. In the majority of cases the injury is severe. HEL is distinct from other day services as it operates specifically for people with an ABI. HEL therefore has a number of advantages: • Attenders enjoy specific peer support from fellow attenders • A focus on the health, social and mental wellbeing of people with ABI • HEL staff acquire specialist skills in working with people with an ABI • HEL provides volunteers with invaluable experience working with this population group • Approximately 30% of HEL volunteers have an ABI. HEL is therefore providing opportunities for voluntary work among people with an ABI • Members can benefit from attending HEL before moving on to other vocationally focused organisations such as Rehab UK.
Projected outcomes • The projected primary outcomes of the work of HEL are as follows: • Improved social and functional independence (improved life skills) of people with an ABI • Improved psychological wellbeing • Improved physical health • Increased motivation and initiative • Increased numbers of people with an ABI accessing day services • A reduction in health and social care expenditure.
Collaborative Working Partnering and Sharing • Therapeutic • Joint working with the Adult Community Rehabilitation Team (ACRT) – Neurological Conditions, City and Hackney Primary Care Trust and Headway East London commenced in January 2007. This includes sharing training resources • Educational • HEL has an ongoing placement programme for Speech & Language Therapy(SALT) students from City University and Music Therapy Students from The Guildhall • Community • Headway East London is involved in a local community gardening project in collaboration with the Environmental Trust and The Friends of Arnold Circus
Other Support Services – Non Attenders - 2007 • Advocacy, Advice and Information Approximately 30 people have accessed and received other support including telephone advice, home visits and referral to legal support in 2007 • Carers Support A monthly Carers/Family Support meeting is held in Wood Green. On average six carers attend this meeting. In 2007 approximately 14 people have attended this meeting on at least one occasion In addition approximately 30 carers of people with an ABI have accessed other support services including telephone advice, home visits and referral to legal support in 2007
Looking forward • Relocation • Headway East London will be relocating to new premises Timber Wharf in Kingsland Road, Hackney • Service Expansion – Develop Satellite Headway Houses • The aim is to reach more people with additional services nearer to their own homes and communities. The first ‘satellite’ Headway House will open in March 2008 in Haringey – serving Enfield, Haringey and Northern Islington. A second ‘satellite’ Headway House is planned to open in Redbridge – serving Redbridge, Barking & Dagenham and Havering in early 2009 • Develop support & information services for carers • Set up 3 additional carer support groups acrossour catchment area in 2008/09 • Develop Outreach Services
