Seminar Objectives To provide a comprehensive training to persons that are interested in participating in the IST Priority of the 6th Framework Programme in order to enable them to draft and submit well developed and focused proposals and subsequently understand how a proposal is chosen by the Commission for negotiations and what are the administrative and operational processes from the selection of a proposal to the completion of the project.

  9. Historical Perspective – The 80’s • 1986: the task force becomes “Directorate General of Telecommunications, Information market and valorisation of research” (DG XIII). • Goal: Europe wants to catch up with US and Japan. • How: by becoming more competitive.

Historical Perspective – The 90’s • Mid–‘90s: Quality of life and sustainable development criteria are added to competitivity to create a better link between research and society. • Creation of a pluriannual programme for European research and development which followed ESPRIT. • Today 6th framework programme (2002–2006).

Historical Perspective – Mid 90’s • 1994: Communication of the European Commission “towards the Information Society in Europe: action plan” • 1998: ESPRIT, RACE and Telematics merged into an unique programme: “Information Technologies” (IST) • IST is structured around 4 technological priorities (key actions)
