Freedom Granted to the People • Freedom of Religion • Freedom of Speech Ex: “ The free communication of ideas and opinions is one of the most precious of the rights of man” • Freely write, and print subject to responsibility for the abuse of freedom in cases determined by law.
Continued…… • Equality of all citizens under the law Ex: “Free to own property and entitled to participate in the political process.”
Who was Excluded from the Rights? • Slaves were excluded because the were not citizens. • Women were excluded because politics were for men only, who owned land and paid taxes.
Reaction of the King • King only sanctioned under popular pressure on Oct. 5 and 6, 1791 • Deputies want approval “though their disappointment, however, he told them that he needed time to look it over in detail and that he would render his opinion on the matter later.”
Oct. 5th- Parisian women marched to Louis’s palace at Versailles. Demand bread using wealth & influence. • King was worried women might become violent and hurt family, so he gave in. • King agreed to provide bread. -Women didnt believe him, so they forced him & him family to move to the old Palace, Tuileries, in Paris, where they could keep closer eye on his activies.

June 20, 1791- Louis and family in disguise fled toward German frontier in a carriage where, hoped to gather foreign support. • 30 mi. from safety, family was caught and escorted back to Paris June 25th.
