The Declaration of the rights of man and citizen France’s documents of rights and freedoms
The declaration of the rights of man made many freedoms including: • The freedom of opinion • The freedom of speech • Religious tolerance • The right of property • Security • Resistance to oppression • Every man is presumed innocent until proven guilty
More rights • The freedom of the press • Taxation according to the ability to pay (fair taxes) • The right to a proper trial • Nothing may be forced on someone if it is not in the law • The military is for the benefit of everyone, not the one person that commands them. • Equality
“The principle of all sovereignty rests essentially in the nation. No body and no individual may exercise authority which does not emanate expressly from the nation.”
These rights only applied to certain people , others were excluded from these rights • A main group that was excluded from the declaration of rights of man and citizen were women. • Another main group that was excluded from the declaration of rights of man and citizen were slaves. • “… the first constitution established for adult males what was for the time a modest requirement of property ownership and tax payment. Others were excluded.”
Although this was a great declaration for the people of France, the king had a different reaction to the document • The king did not want to make the document official because it destroyed the wealthy nobles. • “Faced with increasing shortages of bread, the women of Paris marched to Versailles on October 5 and demanded bread. When the crowd stayed the night, Louis agree to ratify the declaration.” • The crowd then stormed the palace and demanded that Louis move to Paris so that the citizens of Paris could keep a close eye on him. • On October 6, Louis and his family were taken to Paris.
