Campus Exterior Lighting Report and Response System Davis Honors Challenge Lighting Charge Summer Hararah, Jeffrey Lee, Rebecca Fein
The Charge • Devise an efficient system to report malfunctioning light fixtures on campus • Increase public participation in maintenance services • Improve effectiveness of maintenance process
The Current Situation • 4 people on the O & M staff are responsible for 4000 outdoor light fixtures on-campus • Most broken lights go unreported • Majority of campus community is concerned with state of outdoor lighting
Goals • Direct link between campus community and O & M • Simplify reporting and response process • Establish foundations for future development
Concerns & Needs • Operations & Maintenance • Increase reporting • To know where lights are out • Avoid seasonal “rush” connected to daylight savings • Campus Community • Lack of awareness • Desire for publicized protocol
Campus Opinion “IF it was Really Really easy to make the report.” “A button right next to all lights to communicate if one was broken.” “Simpler, easier access to report it, and knowing who to report it to.”
If you noticed a malfunctioning light fixture on campus, would you report it? Survey conducted through www.surveymonkey.com, May 8th-May 29th, 333 responses
Labeling/Classification • Current O & M project • Zoning, numbering • Placing stickers on each light fixture
Implementation • More consistent reports • Fewer broken fixtures • O & M response protocol • Allow for research and development
Suggestions • Gathered from surveys and focus group • Text message reporting • Flashlight campaign • Drop boxes around campus • Articles in the Aggie to publicize
