Economic Woes and Louis XVI • Heavy taxes, inflation (bread 2 x in 1789 alone) • Marie Antoinette “Let them eat cake” • Louis XVI doubled an already large debt to help US. Bankers refused to lend anymore • He avoided paying debt until faced bankruptcy. His proposal to tax the nobility led to a call of the meeting of the Estates General.

Tennis Court Oath • 3rd Estate is locked out • Move meeting to a Tennis Court demanding that they stay until a new constitution be written
July 14, 1789 Bastille and Great Fear • Louis Gives in and tells other estates to join National Assembly • Sensing trouble he stationed mercenaries (Swiss) in Paris • Rumor that foreign troops were coming. Led to demand for gunpowder at Bastille. • Rumors Spread quickly and led to further rebellion
March on Versailles • National Assembly ends Feudalism and issues the Declaration of the Rights of Man • Riot over bread prices (mostly women) • Marched from Paris to Versailles building strength along the way • When they arrived at Versailles demanded king come to Paris with them.
