Scenario You aspire to be a sports coach at a professional club and must explore how coaches have used various roles, responsibilities, skills and techniques successfully. By gaining this key information you are able to lead a presentation to other aspiring coaches on the key aspects of effective coaching.
Task 1 – P1 • Research the roles performed by a successful coach (innovator, friend, manager, trainer, role-model, educator etc.) • Create an observation checklist focussed on these roles and observe a coach/teacher.
Task 2 – P1/M1 • In groups discuss and make notes on the impact of these roles in lesson/session observed. • Research the responsibilities of an effective coach and relate these to practical scenarios.
Task 3 – P1 • Create a code of conduct for a coach (legal obligations, child insurance, child protection, professional conduct, health and safety, equal opportunities, knowledge of the coaching environment.)
Task 4 – P2 • Research the skills required to be a successful coach (communication, organisation, analysing, problem solving, evaluating, time management etc) • Create an observation checklist focussed on these skills and observe a coach/teacher.
Task 5 – P2/M2 • In groups discuss and make notes the impact of these skills in lesson/session observed.
Task 6 – P1/P2 • Create an informative leaflet that identifies 4 roles and responsibilities of coaches defining each one. • State 3 skills required for a successful coach with examples from different sports.
Task 7 – M1/M2 • In addition to the requirements of P1 and P2, the informative leaflet must contain examples of at least 3 coaches from different sports explaining there use of roles, responsibilities and skills.
Task 8 – D1 • In addition to the requirements in P1, P2, M1 and M2 compare the roles, responsibilities and skills of the selected sports coaches. State which roles, responsibilities and skills they all use (similarities) and which roles, responsibilities and skills the individual coaches use (differences).
Task 9 - P3 • Research the techniques employed by a successful coach (observation analysis, performance profiling, fitness assessment, goal setting, simulation, modelling, effective demonstration, technical instruction, developing performer coaching diaries, adapting practices to meet individual needs, designing effective practice sessions.)
Task 10 – P3/M3/D2 • Guest lecturer with coaching experience/visit to professional club/coaching facility.
Task 11 – P3 • Produce a PowerPoint presentation to support informative leaflet that selects 3 techniques and their application in improving performance.
Task 12 – M3 • In addition to P3, give examples of coaches who use these techniques successfully. • Also give examples of coaches who have used these techniques and failed to improve athlete’s performance.
Task 13 – D2 • In addition to P3 and M3, assess the strengths and weaknesses of each technique commenting on the reliability and validity of each one.
