Year 13 BTEC Sport • Unit 3: Assessing Risk in Sport • Knowing how to maintain the safety of participants and colleagues in a sports environment. DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
Introduction • We will now examine the various procedures that are in place as a result of the legislation that we have covered in the first 2 topics of this unit. DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
Procedures: • Operating procedures and good practice • Most sporting organisations use operating procedures that are commonly known as standard/normal operating procedures (S/NOPs). • These contain the safety programme and other health and safety issues e.g. daily alarm testing. • They also contain operational procedures for maintenance and dealing with customer complains. DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
Safety programmes must be in accordance with the relevant legislation and approved guidelines. • They should contain methods of raising health and safety awareness to all staff/employees etc. • Teacher/coaches/fitness instructors need to be aware of the correct operating procedures because we are responsible for ensuring the health and safety of our pupils/participants. DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
Procedures • Staff training and development • Risk assessments • Emergency procedure protocol • First-aid • Communications cascade for notifications of incidents DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
1- Staff Training and development • This helps staff keep up to date with the latest regulations, policies and procedures. • Staff may have to go on specific courses e.g. BTEC Sport in order to increase their knowledge/skills etc. • E.g. Sports analysts- new video software. • Coaches- First-aid • Fitness instructors- trained how to devise risk assessments. DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
2- Risk assessments (see previous notes) • Identify hazards • Risks and level of risk associated with the hazard/s • Control measures • How to eliminate the risk/s DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
3- Emergency procedure protocol • Schools/clubs have various protocols relating to different emergencies • E.g. fire evacuations, injury or first aid. • These procedures are designed to help everyone involved in an emergency. • It is vital that these procedures are made known (put up on the walls/website etc) to everyone in case they need to be followed e.g. fire evacuation. DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
4- First aid • In order to administer first aid to people in need- employers must have adequate and appropriate first aid including equipment, facilities and personnel. • The severity of the casualty will determine whether first aid can be provided on the premises or if hospital treatment is required. • First aid trained personnel should be clearly identified in the event of an emergency. DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
First aid duties • Preserve life • Prevent the condition worsening • Promote recovery • Provide information to more qualified people e.g. patient history, symptoms, treatment, consciousness etc. DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
5- Communications cascade for notifications of incidents • Once an incident has been dealt with the next stage is to report it. • This can be done verbally to a supervisor before being documented in an accident/incident report form. • The following also need to be recorded: • Time and location • Nature of the incident • Who was involved/what action was taken? • Who witnesses this incident? DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
Safety procedures and protocols • Established to maintain a safe environment • Governing body guidelines • Equipment manufacturers’ guidelines • When to consult with others and who to consult with • Local and national requirements. DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
1- Established to maintain a safe environment • A written commitment to provide a safe sporting environment is required in order to establish safety procedures and protocols. • Employers/employees must work hard to create a safe sports environment. DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
2- Governing body guidelines • The governing bodies of sport e.g. FA, together with the support of sports Coach UK, have guidelines to help sports leaders and coaches. • These guidelines may be in the form of a code of conduct or code of practice for your specific governing body. DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
3- Equipment manufacturers’ guidelines • Most sports equipment is simple to use. • However, some items may need to be assembled e.g. basketball/soccer posts. • Each of these items will have instructions for assembly as well as guidelines for with the EU approval mark. • Other examples e.g. footballs/basketball may include instructions suggesting how to insert the needle and inflation levels. DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
4- When to consult with others and who to consult with? The following people/organisations can influence the health and safety of participants and colleagues: • Health and Safety Executive • Managers/supervisors • Other coaches/leaders • Participants in the sessions/activity • Support staff e.g. sports therapists/scientists DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
5- Local and national requirements • Local requirements relating to the safety of sports participants may vary from region to region. • It is essential to check with local authorities/governing bodies of sport before starting an activity. • This will ensure you are following the approved guidelines. DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
Grading tips • P4- Use procedures that are applicable to your favourite sport so you can see how they are used. E.g., staff training, Normal Operating Procedures, Emergency Operating Procedures, equipment checks, first aid. • M2- Explain the procedures by giving relevant examples from your chosen sport. • Consider how successful these procedures would be for your chosen sport providing evidence in support of your answer. DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
Task P-4 Describe three Health and Safety procedures used to promote and maintain a healthy and safe environment. M3- Explain three procedures used to promote and maintain a healthy and safe environment. D2- In your audit Analyse three procedures used to promote and maintain a healthy and safe environment.
