  3. President In 1969 • Richard M. Nixon • Reconciliation was the first goal set by President Richard M. Nixon. The Nation was painfully divided, with turbulence in the cities and war overseas. During his Presidency, Nixon succeeded in ending American fighting in Viet Nam and improving relations with the U.S.S.R. and China. But the Watergate scandal brought fresh divisions to the country and ultimately led to his resignation.

By the 1960s, diners and bowling alleys were moving from the city to the suburbs and while not as ubiquitous, they are still around today. My interest about the Vietnam War • 9,087,000 military personnel served on active duty during the official Vietnam era from August 5, 1964 to May 7, 1975. • 2,709,918 Americans served in uniform in Vietnam. • Vietnam Veterans represented 9.7% of their generation. • 240 men were awarded the Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War. • The first man to die in Vietnam was James Davis, in 1961. He was with the 509th Radio Research Station. Davis Station in Saigon was named for him. • 58,148 were killed in Vietnam. • 75,000 were severely disabled. • 23,214 were 100% disabled. • 5,283 lost limbs. • 1,081 sustained multiple amputations. • Of those killed, 61% were younger than 21. • 11,465 of those killed were younger than 20 years old. • Of those killed, 17,539 were married. • Average age of men killed: 23.1 years. • Five men killed in Vietnam were only 16 years old. • The oldest man killed was 62 years old. Washington, D.C., and the Nixon administration's attempted cover-up of its involvement. The scandal eventually led to the resignation of Richard Nixon, the President of the United States, on August 9, 1974, the only resignation of a U.S. President. The scandal also resulted in the indictment, trial, conviction and incarceration of 43 people, including dozens of top Nixon administration officials. The affair began with the arrest of five men for breaking and entering into the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters at the Watergate complex on June 17, 1972. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) connected cash found on the burglars to a slush fund used by the Committee for the Re-Election of the President, a fundraising group for the Nixon campaign
