2. Enterprise activities at Hexthorpe Primary School Regular consultation with pupils is held through Circle Time, School Council and regular evaluations about what happens in school
Pupils in Key Stage 2 highlighted enterprise education as an area they wished to see included on the curriculum
Successful ventures already included
- running their own radio station in school
- masterminding Harvest Tea celebration events
- winning Technology Challenges for designing an
eco town and running their own snack bar at a aiprofit
3. The Hexfiles magazine project Volunteer ex English teacher Sam Seymour manages a group of Year 6 pupils every Tuesday lunchtime
Pupils who participate in the scheme are given roles and responsibilities in the group such as editor, photographer etc. Pupils learn to lead, delegate and work together as a team.
A team of pupils are nominated as “blaggers”. They have to survey businesses in the locality, find and advertising negotiate advertising deals.
4. The Hexfiles magazine project The group gather ideas for articles on a termly basis. Articles include aspects of school life, the curriculum and give ideas to parents of how they can help pupils at home. Lack of information about what happens in school was an area that parents highlighted in parental questionnaire.
Producing articles involve pupils in researching background information for various topics e.g. an article about Hexthorpe’s railway past
Pupils are also involved in financing the magazine. They run an advertising campaign in the local community where many small businesses support their enterprise
5. Improving the Quality of Life The first edition included articles on pupil personal safety linked to missdorothy.com and child protection, eco sustainability, road safety and healthy living.
The magazine reflects the cultural diversity of the school and has explored topics on different faiths, languages and beliefs. One aim of the magazine in future editions will be to educate pupils and their parents about global issues which will affect their lives
6. Improving the Quality of Life
One particular aim of the magazine is to develop a sense of pride in the local community-this was highlighted in the 1st edition about Hexthorpe’s rich unique railway history
The content of the magazine addresses issues raised by parents in parental questionnaires – how do we help our children achieve more by giving them ideas about topics covered in school
7. Impact Involvement in the club has given pupils a
sense of writing for a real purpose
It has developed their ICT skills
The Year 6 pupils have a real understanding of enterprise. By keeping their own financial accounts, they have developed a realisation of profit and loss. They know that without funding, the magazine would not survive
Feedback from parents show that through the Hexfiles magazine, they have more insight to school life that they would have otherwise missed
