The Mighty Magazine Project Fayetteville-Manlius High School: Essay Writing 11 Kathleen Graf Deeb Mary Patroulis Elizabeth Wheeler
What is it? In this unit, students complete an in-depth study and analysis of a magazine. The finished product consists of two main parts: • Magazine Profile: Student read at least three issues of the magazine they’ve chosen; they then study, describe, and analyze the magazine, based on such features as articles, advertisements, and table of contents. • Exercise in Style: Students write an article appropriate for the magazine they’ve chosen AND an appropriate visual, such as an ad, a cartoon, or cover. We assign other, less formal assignments along the way, in order to study voice and style.
Why should you adopt this project? • It’s highly adaptable and can be used with students of all skill levels, from English Language Learners to gifted writers. • It can be implemented in courses that focus on writing, as well as in literature units, interdisciplinary courses, media studies courses, and ELL classrooms. • While our focus is on the development of voice and style in writing, you might also use Magazine Project to focus on critical reading skills, cultural studies, or gender and class issues.
Objectives • Waste time the three weeks before vacation in February when the winter has beaten us down, and we can’t stand the students. • Also, we’re out of wine. But they’re not out of WHINE.
Student-centered learning • Students select their own project. • They work cooperatively with others. • They learn to read closely and critically. • They study voice, style, content—and many other issues (such as advertising strategies). • They learn to manage time. • They work with technology (publisher, photoshop, word processing programs, etc. • Peer editing.
