Social Networking • Facebook • MSN messenger • MySpace, Bebo • Chat Rooms
Facebook Don’t be “friends” with people you don’t know in the real world Don’t use a real photo of yourself Be careful about any personal information your give away – check privacy settings Never meet anyone in the real world that you only know online, without telling someone you are going
MSN/Chat Rooms • Don't use your real name as your username • Remember ASL: • Age • Sex • Location • Don’t give out any personal details • Be careful who you talk to online – treat people as strangers
MSN/Chat Rooms Remember you don’t really know who you are talking to Don’t answer questions you don’t want to If you feel uncomfortable – leave the chat room or close the Internet Speak to someone you trust if you need to ask advice
Emails • Ensure you have up-to-date anti-virus software • Be wary of opening emails from unknown senders • Beware of scam emails • Never open attachments from unknown senders
Online shopping • Only shop with well known companies • Look for the https in the address bar • Look for the padlock • Do not give your bank details without seeing these signs

Internet Café Safety • If you’re using your own laptop use a Firewall • Be aware of people looking over your shoulder – they could steal your user name and password • When logging into email or Facebook - don’t tick the 'save password' or 'remember me' boxes • Log out, log off • Delete your browsing history before you leave

What to do if you’re worried If you are using the Internet and something happens that you don’t like: • If you are alone – close down the Internet • If you feel uncomfortable about something someone has said or written, or something you have seen: • Close the window • Speak to someone you trust
