Summary of the Book • Gerald Coles provides a deep critical evaluation of the available scientific research on learning disabilities in his book The Learning Mystique: A Critical Look at "Learning Disabilities". The core of Coles' argument is that there is a lack of scientific evidence to back up brain dysfunction as the explanation for learning disabilities. Coles does not argue that these children do in fact have serious learning difficulties. However, he does not attribute their struggles to brain dysfunction. His theory is Interactivity Theory which states that learning disabilities develop from the child's interaction within social relationships.

Age of diagnosis 5. Gender equality 6. Educator’s role 7. School’s role 8. Brain damage 9. Brain dysfunction 10. Learned helplessness/victim blame Our work will be distributed to the following locations to promote information seeking and advocacy related to learning disabilities: YOU! T-EDUC 501 CLASS and….. • White River High School, Sumner Library • Local Coffee Shops • Mel Korum YMCA (Puyallup) • Boys and Girls Club (Tacoma), UWT Autism Center
