The Learning Mystique Important Considerations for Parents By: Dan Howells Stacy Peele Romy Brooks Ashley Barker
Summary of the Book • Gerald Coles provides a deep critical evaluation of the available scientific research on learning disabilities in his book The Learning Mystique: A Critical Look at "Learning Disabilities". The core of Coles' argument is that there is a lack of scientific evidence to back up brain dysfunction as the explanation for learning disabilities. Coles does not argue that these children do in fact have serious learning difficulties. However, he does not attribute their struggles to brain dysfunction. His theory is Interactivity Theory which states that learning disabilities develop from the child's interaction within social relationships.
Coles in a Nutshell Even twin studies neglected social component Not the brain Research lacked neurological basis Interactivity Theory- Systematic economic, social, and cultural conditions are the principle influences to learning failure
