  10. Hammocks is a Pre-Law Magnet School • Our Mission: To integrate the themes of justice, ethics, and conflict resolution into the core curriculum

  11. Eligibility Requirements • Must maintain a cumulative 2.00 GPA or higher in core subjects • Must have a minimum 2.00 or higher GPA in conduct • Students who have 10 or more unexcused absences/tardies may be excluded

SpringBoard • We are partnered with SpringBoard, which is the College Board’s Pre-AP Program • Developed to provide a roadmap for attaining the knowledge and skills students require for success in Advanced Placement courses and college level work • Infuses rigor, sets high expectations, and expands access and opportunity for ALL students • SpringBoard provides culturally and personally relevant activities designed to engage students in: • Problem Solving • Academic Discourse • Critical Analysis

Home Learning • Some home learning is available Online • Username is student ID # • Password is your DOB (YYMMDD) + hm • For example: 960102hm • How to login to your account: • Enroll into your courses (this only has to be done once) • Click on all courses • Click on the appropriate Department • Click on the course in which you wish to enroll. • Click Yes. You are now enrolled and the Course will show up under My Courses. • On the left side of the screen under My Courses, click on the teacher’s name to view the homework assignments. • If no homework is assigned, students are encouraged to read 30 minutes nightly.

  25. Morning Arrival • Drop off in the front drive thru • If you come to a stop, drop your child off and allow them to walk on the sidewalk or striped zone. • Students will walk to the crosswalk to be safely escorted across traffic by the security guard.

Afternoon Dismissal • Students will be released through main gates • Students are not allowed in the park • Will allow cars in the drive thru after busses leave (approx 3:57 p.m.) • If students are not picked up anywhere along the front on Hammocks Blvd by 4:05 p.m., we will bring students into the drive thru by the green box for pickup. No exceptions. SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY • Security Guard will monitor until 4:30 p.m. • We cannot protect your child if picked up at Publix shopping center

  27. If you are absent… • Bring a dated note signed by your parent or a medical note from a doctor to the main office before school to receive an admit. This admit must be shown to all of your teachers. This must be done within 72 hours (3 days) of your absence. • Excessive absences and truancy will result in parental contact, completion of a school social worker’s report, and/or referral for legal action. • Students who have an excessive amount of unexcused absences may not be permitted to participate in field trips or other school functions.

  30. Code of Student Conduct • The code of student conduct is the District’s policy that creates a safe learning environment to ensure academic success • Can be found on our school website • www.hammocks.dadeschools.net • There are 5 Levels of the Code of Student Conduct

  31. Detentions • After School Detentions 3:55 to 4:45 p.m. Monday-Thursday • In the Main Cafeteria • Provide own transportation home • Must have parent signature in order to enter detention hall

  32. Detention Policy Detention Issued Served Not Served Teacher contacts parents to notify them that detention has not been served. Served Not Served Referral Issued & student placed in SCSI for one day. Progressive discipline followed for Repeated occurrences

  33. Dress Code • Everyone MUST wear their school uniform. • SHIRTS: Must be POLO style, Red, White, or Black. No Excessively long shirts; shirt length must not fall below the wrists; Shirts must have emblem; Sweaters and jackets should be solid red, black or white. • PANTS: Must be Khaki or black. CANNOT be jean color. Pants should be worn at original length and fitted at the waist with a belt. • SKIRTS: Must be black or Khaki. * Avoid wearing clothes which are excessively tight or loose.

  34. Student ID Cards • Must have IDs with them at all times • Used to check out books, purchase field trip tickets • If a student loses his/her card, the student must purchase a replacement card for $2.00. • No alterations are to be made to your school ID or a new one will have to be purchased.

Report Bullying • There is a ZERO TOLERANCE for bullying • If you see bullying… • Do not laugh or join in • Show that you are not cool with it • Tell an adult what happened • Use the Anonymous Bullying Box in the Guidance Office • If you are bullied… • Calmly tell the person to stop • Walk away • Tell a trusted adult

Items not Permitted at School • Permanent markers • Playing or trading cards • Toys • Chewing gum • Cameras, walkmans, radios, game cards, or electronic games. • IPods, MP3 or CD players • If these items are found on campus, they will be confiscated • Parents will be able to pick them up the next school day

  37. Cell Phone Policy • You are responsible for the safety and security of your personal property. • Students shall not display, use or activate cell phones during the instructional day. This includes during class, in the library, during lunch, during class changes and during any other structured school activity. • Students may not use cell phones while on a school bus. • If a student is caught using a cell phones and/or electronic devices during the school day it will be confiscated. A parent/guardian will need to pick the item up the next school daybefore or after school. 8:30 a.m.-9:00 a.m. or 3:50 p.m.-4:00 p.m.

  38. Change Elementary to middle is a important transition. 6th grade core subjects are housed in the 800 building to make this transition easier. Most of the time, 6th grade students will leave this building only for electives and lunch.

How to Make the Most Out Of Middle School STUDENTS • Get Organized • Schedule time for homework and other activities • Use an agenda book • Create a system for taking notes • Try New Things • Join a club or take a class that interests you • Meet New People • Get involved in school life • Avoid Trouble • Stay away from negative people that pressure you to do things you don’t want to do • Say “No” • Remind yourself of the consequences

How to Make the Most Out Of Middle School PARENTS • Get Involved • Join the PTSA • Have an open communication with the teachers • Inform the school when there is a problem • Monitor Your Child’s Grades using the Parent Portal • Talk to your children • Have an open communication with them • Ask Questions • Know who your children’s friends are • Emphasize the importance of doing well and trying your hardest
