Reducing Violence Against the Vulnerable Who are we talking about? • Children, Elderly • Victims of domestic violence • Homeless • Ethno-Cultural, ESL, LGTB • Sex trade workers
What are we doing? • Many crimes against the vulnerable occur in social context • Collaborating with community-resolution beyond Criminal Justice System • Education within the Department awareness of diverse issues facing this population and with the community • Modeling the successes of our 10 years with Family Services of Greater Vancouver
Specific Initiatives • Elder Abuse Position • Self-defense training with STW’s, new liaison position, • Education and liaison with populations at risk, various immigrant services, homeless advocates including COV staff, post secondary, women’s centers, youth organizations, Aboriginal Wellness • High Risk Offender Unit
Domestic Violence Stats 2006 • 4,680 Domestic Disputes • 290 assigned in DVACH for follow-up (6.2%) • Staffing in office increased 60% in 2006 (from 7 – 11 investigators)
DV Successes with partnership Violence Against Women in Relationships (VAWIR) 67% conviction rate on VAWIR files working with community (FSGV) partner 33% conviction rate on VAWIR – no direct collaboration with community, or f/u beyond patrol

Traffic Section Mission The Vancouver Police Traffic Section is dedicated to improving road safety in the City of Vancouver. Safer Roads-Save Lives
Mandate The Traffic Section prevents damage to property, reduces injuries and loss of life by providing for the safe and effective movement of all traffic including pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles. Safer Roads - Save Lives
Traffic is comprised of three Units • Traffic Enforcement Unit • Collision Investigation Unit • Traffic Services Unit: • Hit & Run Team • Commercial Vehicle Team • Community Road & Education • Safety Team • Traffic Support Team • Taxi Team

VTEP – Granville Street October 2, 2006 – January 29, 2006 Number of VTEP hours- 4118 hrs. Tickets written (including by-laws) - 15,026 Motor Vehicle Accidents reported to Police On Granville Street Oct 2- Jan 29 2005 - 50 2006 - 40 A 20% reduction in crashes
