High Point Academy • 2010/2011 Student Population • PreK-8th grade – 530 students
High Point Academy • 2010/2011 Categoricals
High Point Academy • Introduction and Planning for Data Team Implementation • Feb. 2010: CLCS conference • March 2010: Family Satisfaction Survey • April 2010: Developed 2010/2011 calendar and revised school hours (approved by Governing Board) • Feb. – June 2010: Data Team Leaders/Teachers trained
High Point Academy • Stakeholder support/emphasizing the importance • Governing Board: update quarterly • Parents – keeping them informed • Informational Parent Tours • Weekly newsletter • Monthly HPA Perspective • Volunteer Trainings/Coffee with the Principal • Acknowledging their sacrifice
How it Started at HPA • Spring of 2010 • Attended trainings (4-5 instructional staff) • Summer of 2o10 • Certified trainer training (Candace and Kelle) • August 2010 • Whole staff training on data teams and importance of why we are implementing (Candace and Kelle) • September 2010 - Current • First data team meetings (twice a month since then)
Data Teams at HPA • Teams • Grade level with at least one instructional aid and a specials teacher (exception-middle school = one whole group) • Average size = 4 people • Sacred time • 1st and 3rd Wednesday from 2-4 pm (early release days) • No other meetings, time off granted, etc. • If need to cancel (snow day for example), teams are required to make up the time before the next set meeting • Support • If more time needed, we find coverage.
Successes • Teachers are collaborating on more than just reading • Sense of community has been formed • Parents and teachers realize importance of tracking student growth/achievement • NWEA winter scores showing improvements in reading/language usage
Challenges/Next Steps • Few staff who are still not seeing importance of data teams/not taking it seriously • Middle school team • Expanding middle school team • Training new staff • Student buy-in • Focus for next year? • Mid year math results do not compare to reading and language usage
