  1. “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen.” – (Mt. 28:18-20) The Masters’ Plan of Evangelism Text: Mt. 28:18-20 October, 2006 David Pike

  2. Our Mission Jesus’ Mission – “for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Lk. 19:10) Mission accomplished – “…Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.” (Jh. 4:42; cf 20:30-31) Disciples mission – “…Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” (Mk. 16:15-16) Mission status – “…the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven.” (Col. 1:23) Our mission – “And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” (II Tm. 2:2) We are on a mission of life and death. We must save others by using the same strategies Jesus used to produce the same results!

  3. Selection People were His method – “He chose from them twelve” (Lk. 6:13) People willing to learn – “Now when they…perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.” (Ac. 4:13) He concentrated on a few – “He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles…” (Lk. 6:13-17) He depended on a few – “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.” (Jh. 17:6, 9, 20) He did taught masses – “but they feared the people” (Lk. 20:19) Take action to select and concentrate on training a few willing learners.

  4. Association He stayed with them – “Lo, I am with you always” (Mt. 28:20) To know is to be with – “Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach” (Mk. 3:14) He developed close relationships – “But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them. And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.” (Jh. 16:4) It takes time and follow-up – “And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.” (Jh. 15:27; cf. 4:39-42) Take time and follow-up on preaching to the masses, developing relationships, and preparing evangelistic leaders.

  5. Consecration He required obedience – “Take My yoke upon you” (Mt. 11:29) Count the costs – “For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost…whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.” (Lk. 14:28, 33) To obey is to learn – “So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.” (Lk. 5:11) Obedience is proof of love – “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (Jh. 14:15) Jesus’ example – “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” (Mk. 10:45) Don’t be disobedience, indifferent, or complacent. Love and obey!

  6. Impartation He gave Himself away – “Receive ye the Holy Spirit” (Jh. 20:22) He gave all that He had (I.e. love, joy, peace, – “And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one…Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (Jh. 17:22, 24; 15:13) The compulsion of evangelism – “For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.” (Jh. 13:1-20) They were given credentials and a Comforter – “I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.” (Jh. 17:23; cf. Ac. 4:13) Impart a compulsive and selfless evangelistic way of life to others!

  7. Demonstration He showed them how to love – “I have given you an example” (Jh. 13:15) He showed them how to pray – “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven…” (Mt. 6:9-13) He showed them to use Scriptures – “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.” (Jh. 15:7) He showed them how to teach – “And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God!…” (Mk. 10:24-31) Class is always in session. Explain and demonstrate how to live!

  8. Delegation He assigned them work – “I will make you fishers of men” (Mt. 4:19) Practice to be evangelists – “began to send them out…” (Mk. 6:7) • Provide instructions and expectations: • Words to say - “But whatever house you enter, first say ‘Peace to this house.’” (Lk. 10:5) • Target subjects - “Now whatever city or town you enter, inquire who in it is worthy” (Mt 10:11) • Expect hardships – “But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge you…” (Mt. 10:17-18) • Expect division – “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword…” (Mt. 10:34-38) • Sent out in pairs – “…began to send them out two by two…” (Mk. 6:7) Post-resurrection requires executing the Great Commission. Give practical assignments with instructions and expectations!

  9. Supervision He kept check on them – “Do ye not yet perceive?” (Mk. 8:17) Continuous review and application – “When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up? They said to Him, ‘Twelve.’” (Mk. 8:19) Learn to be patient – “…And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did? But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” And they went to another village.” (Lk. 9:51-56) Maturity requires experience (OJT), leading by example, working, & constant follow-up. Don’t give up on the big picture!

  10. Reproduction He expected them to reproduce – “Go and bring forth fruit” (Jh. 15:16) Confidently affirm the glory of Jesus – “Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (Mt. 16:16-18) Each one teach one – “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me” (Jh. 17:20-21, 23) Commanded to go – “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature…” (Mk. 16:15-16; cf. Ac. 8:4) Churches prove the plan works (Ac. 2:47). Don’t take short-cuts!

  11. Use Evangelistic Strategies To Fulfill Your Mission

  12. The Master and Your Plan Jesus fulfilled His mission and plan – “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Ac. 4:12) Can you say, “Follow me, I know the way?” – “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” (I Tm. 4:12) Priority - “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Mt. 6:33) We must pay the price for our cause – “whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.” (Lk. 14:33) We can not save others, if we are not saved! How can you know? – (Mk. 16:16; Ac. 2:38; Mt. 10:32; 2:47) The most rewarding mission on earth is to be saved to save others.
