  1. Magnetically Targeted Drug Delivery to the Brain & Central Nervous System Prepared for the Laboratory for Product and Process Design Created by Eric Lueshen Advisor: Andreas A. Linninger Presented on January 25, 2012

  2. Main Projects for this Semester • Project 1: Intrathecal experiments with MNPs for targeted delivery • Get the animal protocol approved and start animal experiments • Build & test new spine models with bone/flesh • Perform simulations to determine optimal magnetic fields and other parameters • Conduct different MRI experiments • Write and submit article on IT magnetic drug targeting • Project 2: Theory of magnetism and electromagnetism • Perform simulations to determine optimal magnetic fields and other parameters • Project 3: Implant-assisted magnetic targeting experiments • Build and test different experimental setups using stents and other devices

  3. Supplementary Projects for this Semester • Project 4: Finish revisions, resubmit, and publish PK paper #1 • Project 5: Start thinking about and constructing my prelim defense

  4. MRI Experiments • Two aims: • To view the level of contrast obtained by using our magnetite nanoparticles • To determine if and to what extent the nanoparticles change position on application of the magnetic field • Two Experiments: Viewing Angle & Magnetic Field Viewing Angle 0.212g/ml 0.043g/ml 0.085g/ml 0.17g/ml Side View

  5. MRI Experiments -- Results • Contrast and calibration experiment:

  6. IT Magnetic Targeting Animal Protocol • Title: “Intrathecal Magnetic Targeting to Reduce Drug Distribution Variability and Increase Targeting Specificity” • Very near completion • Meeting with veterinarian tomorrow to review protocol L5-L6

  7. Pharmacokinetics Article #1 • Title: “First Principles Pharmacokinetic Modeling; A Quantitative Study on Cyclosporin” • Revisions are almost completed • Possible journals for article submission and their impact factors: • Journal of Theoretical Biology (IF = 2.4) • Clinical Pharmacokinetics (IF = 4.5) • Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (IF = 2.9) • Where our PK paper #2 was published • European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (IF = 3.3) • Journal of Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics (IF = 1.7) • Where we originally submitted this article

  8. Questions?

  9. Magnetic field Viewing Angle Experiment 2 AIM: To observe the movement of the MNPs in a fluid upon the application of homogenous magnetic field in the MRI. Plastic falcon tube with water MNPs RESULT: To observe any upward movement and level of disturbance on application of the field.
