  2. Why? • Protests have been occurring across America after Richard Nixon announced his decision to invade Cambodia and expand involvement in the Vietnam War • College campuses exploded with rallies and demonstrations of all kinds ranging from speeches against Nixon’s administration to burning of the Constitution

  3. America, love it or leave it • Kent State University was one of the many campuses that had multiple protests and rallies • What started out as the usual socializing in the bars turned into chaos • Bonfires were built in the streets, cars were stopped, store windows were smashed and police cars were hit with bottles

  4. Call to Action • Kent, Ohio’s entire police force was called in as well as officers from the surrounding counties • Mayor Leroy Satrom declared a state of emergency, calling Governor James Rhode for help and ordering all bars to be closed • Early closing times for the bars only increased the angry crowds size

  5. Ohio’s National Guard • Governor Rhodes and Mayor Satrom called in members of the Ohio National Guard which were already on duty in Northeast Ohio • Kent was a mess when they finally arrived • The ROTC building on campus was set on fire • 1,000 demonstrators surrounded the building which leads to rumors of who was responsible for the fire

  6. Reactions from the Protesters • Police forces and the National Guard were met with violence from protesters • Police arrested multiple people and had to rely on tear gas to stop protesters from hurling rocks at them

  7. May 4th, 1970 • On Monday at noon a crowd began to form on the Commons • 3,000 people were estimated to have gathered • 500 core demonstrators • 1,000 were supporters of the core demonstrators • 1,500 were just spectators • 100 National Guards were positioned by the burned down ROTC building

  8. How? • General Canterbury made the decision to disperse the crowd and was announced using a bullhorn • The protestors ignored this and the Guard fired tear gas into the crowd and began moving across the Commons • The protestors moved up Blanket Hill and back towards the practice football field, trapping the Guards • They then began yelling and throwing rocks at the Guard

  9. When the Dust Cleared… • The guards began moving back up Blanket Hill • 28 out of the 70+ Guards turned and fired their rifles and pistols into the crowd • 67 shots were fired in 13 seconds • Four students died; 9 wounded • Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer & William Schroeder
