The Kent State massacre had a positive effect on education in terms of campus safety and a symbolic affect in terms of being part of a trend that sparked new ideas and popularized a new curriculum. However, out of the violence emerged a new problem for teachers and faculty. -Massacre -Immediate impacts -Need for change -Issues that surfaced -Ideas that surfaced
MASSACRE Background Info: -Invasion of Cambodia -May 1 rally -May 2 fire -May 3 protest -May 4 scheduled rally National guard ordered students to disperse before rally started. Since students refused, the guards used tear gas but it was ineffective because of the wind. Guards advance on crowd and during retreat they fired, killing four students and wounding nine.
“…sparked the worst American crisis since the civil war,” Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren Education….. “single factor that triggered the only national student strike in US history” -4 million students protested -900 colleges shut down Politics… -Shift in public opinion on war -US troops abandoning US side -Nixon withdrew from Cambodia
“It is my hope that this tragic an unfortunate incident will strengthen the determination of all the nation’s campuses, administrators, faculty, and students alike to stand firmly for the right which exists in this country of peaceful dissent,” President Richard Nixon -Faculty had to aid and comfort students -New Campus Riot Bill -“must surely mark the last time that loaded rifles are issued as a matter of course to guardsmen confronting student demonstrators” -Change in student attitudes
Issues that surfaced • -Limits on campus freedom • “Speech codes” or “Free speech zones” • Faculty’s challenge and that start of a new problem in education • Purpose of education: help student realize full potential as a citizen and informed individuals • “Politics must stop at the schoolhouse door” Teachers are wanted, not preachers
Progression in Education because of the Kent State Massacre • -Students started protesting more than war (violence in government) • -Upheaval • “New Mood” led to loosening of curricular frameworks • Desire for occult studies: extrasensory perception, hypnotism, yoga, astrology • More interested in supernatural and spiritual • Lead to introspective vision and ultimately PSYCHOLOGY • 1975 psych majors and graduate students -Sidney Maryland and Careerism -Wanted to focus on element of education that could reach non-radical, non- violent audience -Includes job-training, wage-earning, transition to adulthood, reading, and writing -today?
In conclusion…. Kent state, although a tragedy, not only affected politics and government, but positively impacted education by creating new ideas. However, these ideas contribute to a conflict that still exists today concerning political activism. This “conflict” does not have to be a negative affect, but an enlightening problem that could be creatively worked out.
