  2. Directive 98/5/EC of the European Parliament and the Council of 16 February 1998 • Right to practice under the home-country professional title; • On a permanent basis; • Registration with the competent authority of the host Member State; • Application of same rules as for national.

  3. Belgium system • Directive 98/5/EC has not been implemented by law; • Deadline for implementation: 14 March 2000; • The French and Dutch Bar in Brussels have implemented the Directive in their professional rules.

  4. The current regime of the Brussels Bar: • A list for Belgian lawyers; • Non-qualified foreign lawyers; • B list for non EC lawyers; • E / EU list for EC lawyers.

  5. French Bar requirements: Registered at their national Bar; A copy of their professional card; A specimen of the letter heading. Dutch Bar requirements: Registered at their national Bar; Have insurance in their country of origin. The E / EU list.

  6. CONT. • The E/ EU list system • Contribution: based on half of the world income; • Insurance benefit; • After three years of practice of Community law or Belgian law • Registered in List A for National lawyers, if required. • The B list • For all non EC lawyers; • Basic contribution; • No insurance benefit.
