  2. The Kingdom of Israel • Divided into 2 kingdoms, Israel and Judah • Both were conquered by more powerful neighbors. Israel was destroyed and its people scattered • Judah survived

  3. The Jews and the Romans • In 63 B.C. the Romans took over Judah. At first they ruled through Jewish kings. • In 6 A.D. Augustus Caesar turned Judah into a Roman province- Judea • Jewish kings gone ruled by a procurator

  4. What to do??? • Jewish leaders argued over what to do about the Romans • Some wanted to work with the Romans • Some wanted to rebel using force • Some opposed Roman rule by strictly following their traditions • Some moved away and settled in isolated areas

  5. Jewish Teachings • The Tanakh is the Jewish holy book. The Torah is the first section • The Torah is the same as the first 5 books of the Christian Bible. (Pentateuch)

  6. Jewish Teachings • A basic teaching of the Jewish faith was that God would send a messiah (deliverer) to save the Jewish people. • There were many prophecies about “the messiah” in their holy writings so the people were expecting his arrival

  7. Jesus of Nazareth • Preached about God’s kingdom from 30 to 33 A.D from Galilee to Judaea • Was raised Jewish • Was know for his amazing way of teaching using illustrations that the common people would understand. • Soon assembled a small group of 12 apostles to travel and preach with him

  8. He fufilled the prophecies that were written in the holy writings He said he was sent by God and preached about a kingdom Jesus Caused Great Division Among the Jews

  9. The Jews were expecting a deliverer so they believed it meant someone to save them from Roman rule Jesus taught peace and love and did not get involved in Jewish government. When some of the Jews wanted to make him king he fled to the mountains to get away. Jesus Caused Great Division Among the Jews

  10. Jesus and the Religious Leaders • Pharisees and Sadducees were the Jewish legal and religious leaders • Were concerned about the power that Jesus was gaining among the people • Lots of conflicts between the Jewish religious leaders and Jesus

  11. What Happened? • Ultimately Jesus was killed • Those Jews who believed that Jesus was the messiah became Christians • Those who didn’t remained part of the Jewish faith

  12. Ist Century Christians • Followed the teachings of Jesus • * stayed separate from Roman religion • * stayed separate from Roman politics • This led to heavy persecution

  13. Christianity Spreads • In spite of the persecution, Christianity spread throughout the entire Mediterranean region as well as Asia Minor within 30 years.

  14. Why Did It Spread SO Far So Fast? • Part of Christian worship was preaching “The Good News” (evangelizers) • Apostles that had been with Jesus led this work as well as Paul of Tarsus • Roman road system made travel easy • Common language (Hellenistic Age/ Roman expansion)

  15. The Roman Empire Becomes Christian • Christianity was growing however there were many Romans who did not embrace this religion and stuck to their traditions • Constantine was the first Christian Emperor. • Melded traditional practices with Christianity (Saturnalia)

  16. Eventually Rome is known as The Holy Roman Empire • The Catholic Church is established there still today.
