Jesus • A Jewish man that started Christianity. • Jesus was born in the Roman province of Palestine, in a city called Judah (Judea). • Jesus encouraged His followers to obey the Ten Commandments.
Jesus continued • Much of what Jesus taught grew out of his Jewish upbringing. • He taught that there was only one God (Romans and Greeks believed that there were many gods). • Jesus preached that God loved everyone and wanted people to be kind to each other. • Jesus preached forgiveness and mercy.
Jesus’s Crucifixion • Some local leaders feared that Jesus’s success would upset their Roman rulers and so His fellow Jews accused him of being a false prophet. • The Romans believed that Jesus was innocent, but wanted to please the local leaders. • Jesus was sentenced to be crucified, or put to death on a cross in about AD 30.

Apostles • Twelve disciples that were chosen to help Jesus spread his teachings.
Peter and Paul • Two Apostles that spread Jesus’s teachings throughout the Mediterranean region.
catacomb • Underground burial tombs where Christians first met.
synagogue • A Jewish place of worship.
persecute • Punished for ones beliefs.
Messiah • Savior or someone who saves or rescues.
Constantine • An emperor that made Christianity equal to all other religions. He also outlawed persecution of Christians.
Theodosius • An emperor that made Christianity Rome’s official religion in AD 180.
Christianity • Christianity began to divide after the death of Constantine in about AD 324. • It split into two parts: • Roman Catholic Church • Byzantine Orthodox Church All Christians believed that Jesus is the central to all their beliefs.
Roman Catholic Church • Western part of the empire • The Pop is the leader of the church and has authority over all Christians.
Byzantine Orthodox Church • Eastern part of Empire. • The emperor was the head of the church.
Christianity Today • Practiced throughout the world • There are about 1.5 BILLION Christians throughout the world. • Christians believed that after Jesus was crucified, God’s presence remained on earth in the form of the Holy Spirit.
